Hello.

Love to be in front of the camera, but sometimes hidden behind it. Never ending passion for food & fitness. Hope you enjoy my journey!

FIVE-HT

FIVE-HT

What is life without salad?

HIPSTER JAPANESE CAFE.

After watching the Kichi Kichi Omu Rice video and the recent craze for poke bowl locally, I just have to pay FIVE-HT a visit. They just know my weakness! Silky egg, wagyu, truffle, sashimi, avocado, creative coffee concoction and many more!

Five-HT (5-HT) is an abbreviation for 5-hydroxytryptamine (a.k.a neutotransmitter serotonin). 5-HT is used for insomnia, depression, anxiety, migrane, obesity, attention deficit, etc. So what is the name of this restaurant suggesting? It's a place for your happy meal! Very big claim.

Happy with the variety I chose. Let's dig in! Which one to attack first? Commonsense will be from the mildest taste to the strongest. But sometimes you just need to eat the most vulnerable one first. In this case I went for the wagyu don!

It's a cosy little cafe with interesting coffee choices and good food list. They just know how to pick the food, somehow! All they need is some good dessert.

Salmon mentaiko (RM26). Seared salmon topped with spicy cod roe mayonnaise, parmesan & sukiyaki sauce. It's so tasty! Too bad the salmon to rice proportion wasn't nicely measured. I barely have enough salmon to go with all the rice. It was so thinly sliced and the mayonnaise was overwhelming. I need my protein and omega, yo!

Shoyu udon (RM12). Served cold. Yeah .. Cos I love udon and needed more carbs for bulking. Haha! Udon in cold dashi shoyu broth, spring onion, tempura flakes, and an onsen egg. Don't let the look fool you! It's sooooooo dayumm good! I poured the remaining sauce into the leftover rice from salmon mentaiko don and not a single drop of sauce nor rice was left. Yummmza!

Runny yolk never fails!

Gyu Tamago (RM90). Beautifully seared wagyu beef and silky egg skin. 'Nuff said.

Yuzu crepe (RM18). I had high hope for this .. Sad to say this is disappointing. I did explain to the chef why I don't think it's good enough and they were polite when receiving critics. #attitudewin

Poké bowl (RM45). Sashimi ceviche in soy lime and spicy citrus sauce, cucumber & avocado.

For the benefit of those who don't know what a poke bowl is or those who wonder what is the difference between a chirashi don and a poke bowl.

Chirashi means "scatter", is a bowl of rice that is usually topped with vegetables and a variety of raw sliced or diced fish in Japanese cuisine. Fine dining would call it deconstructed sushi. Poke means "to slice or cut", is a raw fish salad served as an appetiser in Hawaiian cuisine. So sashimi in chirashi will come fresh, but those in a poke bowl are marinated in some refreshing dressing.

Verdict:

All the dishes I tried are flavourful, except for the yuzu crepe.

Quality food but that does not justify the steep pricing.

Portion is a tad small.

Oh! and the miso soup that comes with the dish is good.

Individual taste?

Poke bowl, well balanced. Wagyu don, one of the best I had in KL. Salmon mentaiko, very tasty and too little salmon. Cold udon, it will surprise your tastebuds!
